prezentációm az ELTE pedagógiai konferencián/short summary in English
In my role as an assistant professor teaching "Introduction to Visual Communication" I incorporated visual AI tools to support undergraduate students (both full-time and part-time) training for a degree in paedagogy, many of whom have no educational backgrounds in the arts. However, I faced challenges due to the students’ limited visual literacy skills and unfamiliarity with technology. A survey revealed confusion among students about the differences between AI image generators and other visual tools, leading them to express interest in using AI for both personal and educational purposes, despite lacking a clear understanding of its capabilities. An exercise aimed at expressing emotions through AI-generated images highlighted their difficulties in creativity and visual literacy, as students often opted for conventional, commonplace tropes, and failed to spot even very obvious AI errors. Ultimately, my experience indicated that while AI tools could assist in certain areas, they could not replace the need for foundational visual literacy and critical thinking skills in education.
